Improving HGV safety on UK Roads is a vital task. The recent Dept. of Transport Annual Road Traffic Report shows HGV and lorry miles have increased by 3.7%, the fastest annual growth since the 1980s.
In contrast, bicycle traffic went down by 6% and this was the first downturn in cycling miles on UK Roads for almost 10 years.
Blind Spot Protection is Vital
With more lorries on the roads, it is even more vital to protect your fleet and reduce cyclist blind spot accidents in UK Towns and Villages, especially during the winter when weather conditions can add fog, ice, rain and bright low-level sunshine blinding the windscreens.
Some towns and cities are adding more cycling infrastructure to the roads, but this can only reduce the danger areas – not remove them. London is currently spending £10 per head on cycle lanes but this is not happening everywhere.
The DoT says: “If the Government wishes to meet its target of a doubling cycle use in England, it needs to encourage HGV fleet owners to purchase the latest lorries that have far fewer blind spots.
